Katosa Aug Shrine Guide: Unlocking the Two Rings in BOTW
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Katosa Aug Shrine offers a unique combination of discovery and challenge. Located in the waters of Lake Hylia, this shrine requires players to solve a visual puzzle before facing a tough Guardian Scout inside. This practical look at the shrine covers exactly what you need to know to find it, unlock it, and conquer it without wasting time or resources.
Where to Find the Katosa Aug Shrine
The shrine itself is not visible initially. It is hidden beneath Lake Hylia, in the central region of Hyrule. Head to the small island in the lake where you will find a researcher named Nobo. He is the key to the shrine quest, “The Two Rings”. The shrine entrance sits at the bottom of the lake directly beneath where the two rings of light appear on the surface.
How to Solve the Two Rings Puzzle
Nobo mentions seeing two rings of light floating on the water. The solution is to dive or glide through both rings in a single run. If you touch the water between rings, they reset and you have to try again. The most practical method for everyday players is to climb to a high point overlooking the lake, such as the large stone bridge to the north. From the top of the bridge’s arch, paraglide down. Time your descent so you swoop directly through the first ring, then immediately angle toward the second ring. If you miss the height requirement, use the Cryonis rune to raise pillars of ice and stand on them to reattempt the glide without swimming. Once you pass through both rings successfully, the lakebed will rumble, and the Katosa Aug Shrine will rise out of the water.
What to Expect Inside the Shrine
This shrine is classified as a combat trial, specifically a Modest Test of Strength. There are no environmental puzzles once the gate opens. The entire room is dedicated to a fight against a Guardian Scout II. Before engaging the guardian, look to your immediate left for a treasure chest. Open it for a useful weapon, like a Knight’s Bow, which can give you a strong ranged advantage in the fight. Inside the main arena, stone pillars provide cover. You should use them wisely to control the flow of the battle.
How to Beat the Guardian Scout II
Fighting a Guardian Scout with modest gear can be tough, but a few specific tactics make it manageable. Keep your shield up. The Scout’s sword swings can be parried, which stuns it and leaves it open for a quick attack combo. When the Scout crouches and spins, it is preparing a spinning charge attack. Back away or run behind a pillar to avoid damage. When it starts firing its laser, use the pillars as cover. The laser cannot penetrate the stone pillars. Alternatively, use an arrow to shoot the Scout directly in the eye. This interrupts its laser and stuns it for several seconds. If you have unlocked Stasis+, use it to freeze the Scout in place for a free barrage of heavy hits. Focus on dodging its attack combos and counter-attacking only when it is stunned or locked in an animation.
Rewards for Completing the Shrine
Your primary reward for clearing the Katosa Aug Shrine is a Spirit Orb. Every four Spirit Orbs can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or an additional Stamina Vessel. This makes the shrine a key target for players looking to upgrade their core stats early in the game. The chest in the shrine also contains a weapon that can help you as you explore the Lake Hylia region and beyond. The Spirit Orb is the most valuable part, providing permanent progression toward Link’s maximum potential. Marking shrines like this one for an early visit helps smooth out the difficulty curve of the surrounding areas, letting you take on tougher enemies and environments with more confidence as you prepare for the Divine Beasts.
